The authors arrived on Wednesday and were treated to a lovely welcome dinner.   On Thursday morning, many of the authors visited local classrooms and talked to middle school kids. Kate White visited a class at Anna Julia Cooper. The kids were great participants, and Kate led a lively discussion that touched on celebrities, dealing with procrastination, giving yourself a confidence boost by standing like Wonder Woman, and the kinds of things that these kids face but don't see in books, like dealing with witnessing violence.   The new format of the author question and answer session was lovely at the luncheon. Bob Deans moderated, as he does at the dinner, and the authors were all incredibly charming.   The dinner was wonderful, as always. The authors were all engaging and charming. I was on the edge of my seat.

VMFA. It was even more perfect because I got to spend it with this amazing family! Chad and Lauren are the kind of people that inspire me to be a better, more grateful human being, and they are raising a little boy who is just a big a ray of sunshine! The little boy on the way has a great family waiting for him! Chad was really showing off his new lungs (can you believe he just had a double lung transplant?!) and Lauren certainly had more energy than I did in my last month of pregnancy! They were troopers with running around all over the lawn and keeping up with an almost-three-year-old. Makeup by Holly B! If you aren't following her already, go do it now! She totally inspires me to up my game on a regular basis! She is gorgeous on the inside and the outside, and she is amazing at what she does! She has been kind enough to walk us through just some of the benefits of hiring a professional makeup artist and hairstylist for family photos in the following guest post        .

Why Hire a Professional Makeup Artist and Hairstylist for your Family Photos

Family photos memorialize a moment in time, shared with the most important people in your life.  So, shouldn’t photos that important capture you as your most beautiful self? Then, the most important thing you can do, after choosing a professional photographer who specializes in photographing families, is to hire a professional makeup artist and hairstylist. It is proven that the sequence of events leading up to a family photo session can shape the outcome of the photos.  The more enjoyable the experience - the better the overall photo session and quality of the photos.  A bad hair day and bad makeup can cause stress which can negatively impact your mood, negatively impact the mood of your family and result in bad photos. All of which can consequently lead to increased costs, due to increased editing or worst, an overwhelming feeling to be re-photographed. The top 5 reasons to secure a professional hairstylist and makeup artist for your next family photo session:
  1. Enhance your natural beauty and minimize problem areas such as tired eyes, fine lines, wrinkles and even breakouts; when you look your best, you feel your best;
  2. Save time by eliminating stress associated with running around to have beauty services provided; on-location beauty services can be provided in the luxury of your home;
  3. Relax and treat yourself to a calming, pampered experience;
  4. Leave it to the professionals to use high quality products that will hold up to sweat, humidity, even tears, and photograph beautifully; can minimize the amount of time spent editing which can save you money;
  5. Professional hair and makeup artists will design a cohesive look to compliment your family’s look.
The next time you decide to have family photos taken, hire a professional photographer, a professional hair and makeup artist who can minimize your stress level by ensuring you look your best.  Approaching the photo session relaxed and looking your best can set the stage for an enjoyable experience for you and your entire family.  Photos you will be proud to display for years to come. Huge thanks to Holly Byrd Miller!   Elizabeth Crea is a full service photographer specializing in families in all stages, from engagement and weddings to maternity, newborn and children, serving Richmond, VA and the surrounding areas. Why a wedding planner is basically the best gift you can give yourself (Guest Post) http://www.elizabethcrea.com/2016/11/wedding-planner-basically-best-gift-can-give-guest-post/ Wed, 30 Nov 2016 17:45:39 +0000 http://www.elizabethcrea.com/?p=27093 Why a wedding planner is basically the best gift you can give yourself when you are planning your wedding. I am so excited to introduce you to Karen from Pretty Southern Events, a wedding planner right here in Richmond, VA (if you haven't met her already)! She is a mastermind of event planning and a force for good in the world! She also happens to be newly engaged, so she's intimately familiar with the bride's point of view both professionally and personally. I'll turn it over to her: pseSo you just got engaged (yay!!) and now the rapid fire questioning begins: Have you picked a date? Do you have a venue? Do you know what your colors will be? Time of year? Who are your bridesmaids? Ahhhhhhh!Karen Take a deep breath. The person you are madly in love with wants to spend the rest of their life with you. Isn’t that dreamy? Woosaaaahhh If all that questioning has your head spinning, it is definitely time to hire a wedding planner. I think this can be one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself during the planning process. No, I’m not just saying that because I am a wedding planner. I recently just got engaged myself and even though I will be doing most of the planning I will definitely be hiring a wedding coordinator to assist. Karen Here is my list of top reasons to hire a planner: Time: Hiring a wedding planner will save you a lot of time. Let’s face it, planning a wedding is a full time job and if you already have one of those adding that time commitment can seem very daunting. A wedding planner knows exactly how to allocate their time to get the job done. Also not knowing what you are really doing as far as wedding planning goes can cause some mishaps that can cost you not only a lot of time but money as well. Experienced planners usually can prevent these mishaps or can help with a quick fix if something does happen. They know the right people: Wedding planners know the who’s who of the event industry. Working with vendors is one of the key elements to a good wedding planning business. Your planner has taken every opportunity they possibly can to form sincere working relationships with as many local vendors as possible. We like to have a multitude of local wedding vendors in different price points and styles ready to recommend to our clients. This way we can really customize our services to each individual client. Budget: We can help you stick to your budget. Budgeting and sticking to it can be one of the most stressful parts of wedding planning. Wedding planners know vendors of all shapes, sizes, and prices. We can help you negotiate contracts to get you the most for your money. We can also steer you in the right direction when something may be an easy DIY vs. paying a lot of money for it. Stress: This is the #1 reason to hire a wedding planner. We can help alleviate a lot of the stress that comes along with planning a wedding. Nothing is more stressful than having to run around like a crazy person coordinating vendors, setting up venues and decorations, making sure the bridal party is where they need to be, and attempt to get yourself ready. I have seen brides think they can tackle this and fail miserably. Even if you are a planning ninja, at the very least, do your research and hire a day-of coordinator. They will make sure you actually get to enjoy one of the most special days of your life. *A side note on this topic: Please remember your family and guests should be able to enjoy your day with you as well. Do you really want your special aunt to miss your first dance because they are having to work out a problem with your caterer? No! So do Aunt Peggy and favor and hire a planner J. The most important part of my job, and any wedding planner’s job, is to make sure you and your significant other get to enjoy your wedding day. Do yourself a favor and leave the stress to the pros and hire a planner! Xoxo ~Karen Karen Find Karen on facebook, instagram, and the web.

I am always asked for the best locations in Richmond for engagement or family portrait sessions. I love different locations for different reasons, but there are a few places that are great for people looking for a Richmond-y location - somewhere that locals will instantly recognize when they see the photos. Here's a roundup of some of my favorites:
1. Belle Isle - This is a go-to for a reason. There are areas with great skyline views (and views of Hollywood Cemetery), places where you can go out on the rocks (where depends on how high the river is), and pretty natural woodsy areas. I like to park at the Tredegar lot and walk across the pedestrian bridge, and you can usually get some great shots on the bridge too. If it's a pretty day, you'll have to work around people, but it's totally worth it. There are some port-a-potties on the island if you need a potty break, but there isn't anywhere to change clothes if you want to.

2. Monument Avenue - This is a classic Richmond location, albeit sometimes controversial. The wide park-like tree-lined median is great for getting very seasonal images with beautiful yellows, oranges and reds on the leaves in autumn, snow-covered trees in winter, blossoms in spring, and lush greens in summer. The street is cobblestone, and there are tons of historic homes, churches and alleyways in addition to the monuments. You can even plan so that you can have lunch or dinner afterward at some of the great restaurants in the area (like Kuba Kuba or Edo's Squid - yum!)

3. Libby Hill Park -This park in Church Hill has stunning views of the city and the James River, and even has a great view of the Lucky Strike building. The park itself has lots of open grassy areas and can be good for letting kids or dogs run (on leash), but the real standout is the views. You'll more than likely encounter people around, but not so many that they'll interfere with photos.

4. Floodwall Walk - I park in the parking lot on 14th Street. There is a little beach right there, and then you can take the floodwall walk. There are areas with great skyline and river views, and if you walk almost to the other end, you can get killer images under the bridge too.

Doable You made so much of this herself. It was amazing! I'm not even kidding - she made the altar arbor, stained the crates that awesome deep color, arranged all the flowers (from Wegmans!) and painted the vases for the arbor decoration. Those gorgeous chairs in front of the barn doors? She stained and reupholstered them! She made those killer Mr. and Mrs. chargers, and decorated and painted that cool striped box the flowers are in on the head table. She even wrapped the rope on the champagne flutes. She also made that killer seating chart with the neat gold foil and the hex netting cage (and painted those #love letters). If you love any of these awesome details, give her a call! Some of them are available for rent, and she can be your personal DIY guru! oak creek farm,outside,styled shoot, oak creek farm,outside,styled shoot, oak creek farm,outside,styled shoot,oak creek farm,outside,styled shoot, oak creek farm,outside,styled shoot, oak creek farm,outside,styled shoot, oak creek farm,outside,styled shoot, oak creek farm,outside,styled shoot, oak creek farm,outside,styled shoot, oak creek farm,outside,styled shoot, oak creek farm,outside,styled shoot, oak creek farm,outside,styled shoot, oak creek farm,outside,styled shoot, Venue: Oak Creek Farm Styling: Doable You Cake: KiAnna Deville Elizabeth Crea is a full service photographer specializing in families in all stages, from engagement and weddings to maternity, newborn and children serving Richmond, VA and the surrounding areas.
